CFA joined Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Center for Science in the Public Interest, Consumer Federation of America, Project Extra Mile, Recover Alaska, Texans for Safe and Drug-Free Youth, and the U.S. Alcohol Policy Alliance in asking Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to respect Ireland’s authority to enact new alcohol labeling requirements, including a cancer warning statement. USTR had raised objections to the labeling law on the alcohol industry’s behalf during the Biden Administration but dropped those objections following public outcry. The renewed listing of Ireland’s law among USTR grievances raises concerns that the long awaited labeling law, set to go into effect May 2026, could be delayed further. As the groups’ letter explains, strong scientific evidence supports the labeling requirements, which will promote public health and help consumers to make better informed decisions about the amount and types of alcoholic beverages to consume, or whether to consume alcohol at all.
