CFA Asks FDA to Grant Citizen Petition to Treat Gluten as an Allergen on Food Labels

CFA submitted the following comment to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in support of Celiac Journey’s Citizen Petition for new labeling requirements related to gluten. The International Codex Alimentarius and other multilateral bodies, such as the World Health Organization, have long recommended that countries adopt food labeling requirements to ensure that consumers can identify products containing gluten. But while nearly all major U.S. trading partners have adopted such requirements, the U.S. remains an outlier, forcing those suffering from celiac disease to search out foods labeled “gluten free.” As the comments explain, CFA supports Celiac Journey’s request for FDA to treat gluten as a “major allergen,” and to require labels on foods containing gluten to say that the food “contains gluten.”
