Consumer Federation of America submitted the following comments regarding the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s plans to enact front-of-package nutrition labeling. The letter commends FDA for moving forward with new labeling rules, which will serve as an important tool in combatting the nation’s worsening epidemic of obesity and other diet-related disease. It goes on to recommend that the agency implement mandatory labeling rules that are simple, highly visible, and transmit information solely regarding ingredients that raise health concerns. The letter also advises FDA to consider requiring disclosures to help consumers identify foods containing non-sugar sweeteners and other ultra-processed foods.
