Consumer Federation of America Opposes D.C. Bill That Would Double Minimum Required Auto Insurance and Raise Costs

Default News Placeholder 6

In testimony before the District of Columbia Council's Committee on Business and Economic Development, the Consumer Federation of America opposed the Motor Vehicle Insurance Modernization Act, which would increase the minimum required auto insurance and raise premiums.

This bill will increase the minimum required auto insurance to $50,000 bodily injury coverage per person and $100,000 per accident. It effectively targets and punishes low-income residents by requiring them to buy more insurance than they can afford, imposing dramatic rate increases on those already struggling with high costs of current coverage requirements. As a result, this bill will increase premiums and increase the number of uninsured drivers on the road, making the situation worse.
