In comments submitted to the Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, CFA and its allies ask the advisory body to address the lack of data on antibiotic use in agriculture. No comprehensive, quantitative, representative data are currently available to help track progress in reducing antibiotic use in agriculture. Although antibiotic sales data indicate that food animals consume 70 percent of total medically important antibiotics by volume, data on actual usage are necessary to understand how and why antibiotics are used in each animal species, what needs to be done to reduce usage, and whether current interventions are working.
